For Audio Listening Portability, a Bluetooth Wireless Headset is the Way to Go
If you own a laptop of any kind, be it a notebook or a netbook, you should know what I'm talking about when I say the included speakers are insufficient for anything except for listening to in a quiet room. I firmly believe a wireless Bluetooth headset is the best headset option for use with laptops.
Headsets I've Used
I use a headset when I'm talking to my wife via Skype — she's in the US and I'm in the Philippines — because I don't want eavesdroppers from hearing BOTH sides of the conversation. My windows are not dual-paned, so sound isn't as muffled as I'd like (for both directions).
I have yet to use a wireless headset of any kind. Frankly, as knowledgeable as I may be about computer-related peripherals, I never even thought about any kind of wireless headset. I've been using the wired kind, with both PS2 connections and with USB connections. I've also broken all of them in one way or another.
I'm a clumsy person. I trip over wires when no one else would. Headset wires are no exception and the results have been disastrous. I'm on my last headset, which has one broken ear piece, and I refuse to buy another headset which attaches by any kind of wire.
A Headset I'm Going to Buy
While I was working with my MSI Wind netbook, and trying to listen to an audio file with dogs barking outside my window, it became crystal clear to me that no laptop speakers would ever be good enough to hear over the cacophony of sounds that come through my windows. Can you imagine what it would be like if I tried to use it on the balcony outside of my master bedroom? Hearing anything from the laptop would be next to impossible, drowned out by noises I consider to be unnecessary in the first place.
A friend of mine has been using a Bluetooth headset with his cell phone for a couple of years. I knew that and something I should have known should have tripped a switch in my brain. It wasn't until a couple of days when I accidentally spotted a USB wireless Bluetooth headset at an online store that the solution to my audio problems dawned on me.
I am so adamant about getting this device that I'm going to spend whatever I have left from my monthly budget to buy one. I feel like an idiot. I should have known that a USB wireless version existed for something that's been used for cell phones for a long enough period to be annoying.
